The Truth About Intensive Couples Therapy in Philadelphia

Published on 11/7/24
by Melissa Huff Smoldt, LPC

As a couples therapist, I often hear the same words: “Let’s schedule it.” Finally, both partners agree it’s time for therapy – that’s usually the hardest part! But then reality hits. Like many therapists in Philadelphia, my regular weekly sessions are booked weeks in advance. That first session focuses on getting to know you, understanding your relationship, and learning why you’ve decided to start therapy. Then come the individual sessions. Before you know it, weeks have passed, and you feel like you haven’t even started addressing your core issues. This is why I and other therapists at Therapy for Women offer Intensive Couples Therapy in Philadelphia.

Why I Offer Intensive Couples Therapy in Philadelphia

While traditional weekly therapy works for many couples I see, what about those in crisis? Or couples who want to make progress more quickly? I’ve worked with couples dealing with:

  • Recently discovered infidelity
  • One partner considering divorce
  • Major life decisions looming (relocating, having children, career changes)
  • Severe communication breakdowns needing immediate attention

For these couples, waiting weeks to address these issues only prolongs their stress and frustration. That’s exactly why I work with clients for couples intensives. I want to provide an opportunity to dive deep into these issues without the usual constraints of 50-minute sessions.

The Intensive Couples Therapy Experience

Here’s what I offer: two full days, six hours each day. It’s an immersive experience that gives you plenty of time to have your feelings heard, understand your partner, and receive my guidance through those tough conversations. While this might sound intimidating at first, the outcomes I’ve witnessed have been invaluable.

What to Expect in Your Two-Day Intensive

Day One:
I start with getting to know you as a couple and understanding what brings you to therapy. Then, I meet with each of you individually to hear your perspective on the relationship. After that, we really dive in!

Day Two:
We focus on practical strategies and deeper healing:

  • Communication techniques for managing conflict
  • Identifying and healing past hurts
  • Learning to share feelings openly
  • Creating a roadmap for the relationship you want

Benefits of Couples Intensives

Clients who have undergone intensive couples therapy in Philadelphia often share how much they benefit from being able to immerse themselves in these sessions. They appreciate:

  • Getting the equivalent of 12 therapy sessions in just two days
  • No more “that’s all we have time for today” moments
  • Maintaining momentum in their healing process
  • The ability to work through issues without weekly interruptions

Is My Intensive Couples Therapy Program Right for You?

In my experience as a Philadelphia therapist, intensive couples therapy works best for:

  • Couples facing immediate relationship crises
  • Partners who have tried traditional therapy without success
  • Busy professionals struggling to commit to weekly sessions
  • Those ready for deep, focused relationship work

Getting Started

I know it sounds like a lot – but your relationship is worth it, and so are you. While I continue to work with couples in traditional weekly therapy (and it works great for many!), if you’re looking to figure things out with your partner now, intensive couples therapy in Philadelphia might be your answer.

Before scheduling an intensive, I always have a 20-minute consultation call with couples. This gives you the chance to:

  • Share what you hope to get out of the intensive
  • Ask any questions about my approach
  • Learn more about my Philadelphia practice
  • Determine if we’re a good fit to work together

Ready to dedicate a weekend to your relationship? Let’s work together to create the connection you both deserve.

Click here to get started and we will schedule your consultation call. We’ll discuss how intensive couples therapy can help transform your relationship.
