LEARN MORE ABOUT AMANDA

Before I became a therapist I struggled with an eating disorder and addiction.

I promised myself if I ever made it to the other side, I would dedicate my life to helping other women heal. I know what it’s like to feel hopeless and lost, to sit in an uncomfortable chair in a dark, gloomy basement while an old man takes notes about you, your struggles, and your worst decisions.

That’s why I’m here to make therapy different for you.

Whether you are experiencing a crisis or just need some guidance, we provide a comfortable, authentic, and easy-going atmosphere where you can grow and feel fulfilled.

Specialities: Alcohol, Substance Use, Eating Disorders and their overlap

Having a younger sister with a chronic medical condition and parents who had a messy divorce, I sometimes joke it was the perfect recipe for anxiety! Early on, I was convinced that if I could control everything around me, everything would be ok. With the help of a great therapist, I was able to break free from these mental rituals and anxiety.

I believe that therapy is not one size fits all. I practice from the theoretical orientation of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, focusing on how thoughts and feelings impact our behaviors and incorporate exposure therapy to change behaviors. I encourage my clients, to slowly incorporate enjoyable activities, routines, and value-based goals back into their lives that have decreased or are being avoided due to their anxiety, OCD, depression, or an eating disorder.

After growing up with a sick parent and losing my dad in my early 20s, I know what it’s like to feel “lost”. Through working on my own mental health, I’ve learned how to navigate grief and face my anxiety. I want you to know that together, we can work through your challenges.

My approach to therapy is all about self compassion and connection. I help you identify your strengths and learn resilience as you face the challenges of life. Life may not get *easier* for us, but we can get better at effectively dealing with it. I am not just a sit and nod therapist. I use my training in dialectical behavioral therapy to teach you coping skills and how to build a greater quality of life. I strongly believe that setting boundaries and learning to use self care can lead to a happier, more peaceful you. I can't wait to work together.

As a child, I knew my career path would involve helping others. I am open-minded, observant, curious, and empathetic. My strength lies in understanding that everyone and every situation is unique (person, diagnosis, treatment, or treatment plan). My person-centered framework allows me to focus on creating a genuine, confidential, and trusting relationship with my clients.

As someone who has experienced mental health challenges myself, I know how important it is to have someone who understands, cares and guides you through the toughest challenges in life. I work from a wellness based perspective and I believe that creating a sense of empowerment is the ultimate goal for therapy. I believe that we can all benefit from learning how to hold space for ourselves, how to love ourselves from the inside out, and become empowered individuals.

My passion is working with women* (*cisgender, transgender, nonbinary, genderqueer – I welcome you). I grew up emotionally sensitive and through therapy, I learned tools that taught me how to embrace it.

I came to therapy through healing from chronic pain and depression, an infinite curiosity for human behavior, and a love for the complexity of people. I have also taught yoga for more than 10 years, and enjoy teaching my client's tools to regulate their emotions, communicate in ways they can feel good about, manage stress more effectively, and move toward what they want to do in their life.

I believe most of us are doing the best we can, and we cannot shame ourselves into a better life.

After moving to the United States at a young age, I know what it’s like to go through challenging transitions. I’ve learned how to navigate new cultures and readapt my identity in order to feel connected to my new home.

As a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, my approach is warm yet direct. Along with couples and families, I predominantly work with individuals going through life transitions, anxiety, trauma, chronic pain, and depression. I believe in the power of validation and the importance of being heard and understood. I view my client as more than just an individual, I see them as a human being. I work on bringing a unique perspective to individual work by seeing how our upbringing and our current life situations impact us. We are the way that we are because of the life experiences we have endured.

As a “third culture kid” who grew up outside the U. S. I'm fascinated by how our varied intersectional identities impact our psyche, sense of self, belonging, and connectedness to the world. As an art psychotherapist and counselor of color, I acknowledge the very real impact that our privileged and marginalized identities have on our lives and mental health. To tailor the session to the individual, I utilize an integrative approach that includes the Creative Arts Therapies, Psychodynamic Therapy, Somatic Therapies, Mindfulness, Relational Cultural Therapy, and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. I have extensive training in art therapy, which provides an alternative pathway for self-expression and self-exploration.

Through my own self-work, I learned that my empathy and compassion are my biggest strengths. I use an eclectic, person-centered, and strength-based framework to help women see their unique strengths. Watching them blossom and shift unhelpful beliefs to ones that promote positivity and growth is what I live for. I have been trained in and often incorporate Mindfulness techniques, somatic interventions, and Cognitive Behavior Therapy interventions to help clients gain awareness and understand the relationship between thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. Additionally, I have extensive training in dance/movement therapy, which allows me to use body-based interventions to help clients become more aware of and understand their physical sensations and emotions. Sessions are tailored to individual needs through ongoing communication.

Experiencing several significant losses, struggling with my own physical health, and depression early in life served to help me recognize a deep sensitivity for the pain that people carry.

As a therapist it is imperative that I don’t ask a client to go somewhere I am not willing to go. Creating a space that is safe, welcoming and free of judgment is key to lay the groundwork for a client to express and create openness. I consider it an honor to help others in the collaborative process of counseling. As a trauma informed and EMDR therapist I am always committed to advocate and hold space for those who seek to be empowered and free from shame. We are many parts of one whole self and it is important to honor perseverance, respect resiliency, and be a part of the healing process towards peace, wholeness and personal growth.
