Amanda E. White, LPC

Therapist, Author, Podcaster

I help women break free from all-or-nothing thinking to create lives that actually work. I am also the Founder and Director of Therapy for Women Center.

Hey Friend! I’m Amanda

The internet loves to tell us we’re either healing or toxic, thriving or surviving, setting boundaries or being a doormat. But what if you’re just… somewhere in between? What if you’re doing okay but still struggling? Making progress but still stuck on some things? Loving your life but also exhausted by it?

I’m Amanda. I’m a licensed therapist, bestselling author of Not Drinking Tonight, and co-host of the Nuance Needed podcast with Sam Dalton. I help women develop the psychological flexibility to navigate life’s complexity without losing themselves in the process.

My work spans multiple platforms where I challenge the quick-fix culture that’s taken over mental health conversations. I reach hundreds of thousands through @therapyforwomen on Instagram and TikTok, where I call out weaponized therapy-speak and share what actually helps. Through my Fence Sitter Substack, I explore one of life’s biggest gray areas: the decision to have children. In my books and trainings for therapists, I teach approaches for those who don’t fit neat diagnostic boxes, like “gray area” drinkers who aren’t sure if they need to quit completely.

As someone in recovery from both a substance use disorder and eating disorder, I understand firsthand that healing isn’t linear. This experience shapes my empathetic yet direct approach. I’ll give you the tools and feedback you need to move forward, rather than platitudes that keep you stuck.

Here’s what I believe: My job isn’t to tell you how to live. Instead, I help you build the skills to make choices that honor your values. Even when those choices are complicated. Even when they’re imperfect. Even when they’re different from what others expect. Real change doesn’t come from finding the “right” answer. It comes from learning to navigate the questions.

Not Drinking Tonight Books

Choosing not to drink can be daunting. It’s everywhere in our culture, our socializing, and our de-stressing. And it can seem black or white: you drink, or you don’t (and if you don’t, people ask why). That’s where Not Drinking Tonight comes in. Judgement-free and relatable, I’ll help you unpack your relationship with alcohol.

My Podcast

I started Nuance Needed because I was exhausted by oversimplified mental health advice flooding our feeds. After years of helping women navigate complex decisions, I was sick of seeing the internet turn everything into black-and-white answers when real life happens in the gray. Each week, we model holding strong opinions loosely. We debunk TikTok trends that might do more harm than good. We share evidence-based strategies that actually work. We tackle topics most creators avoid because they’re not trendy.

I created this space because nuance—seeing other perspectives, adapting to new information, changing your mind—predicts good mental health. This podcast is for anyone intimidated to have these conversations but wants to. Who’s tired of content that stops at diagnosis instead of showing you how to actually live. Who knows that building a more nuanced world means getting messy and hearing perspectives different from our own.

Trainings for Therapists

I train clinicians worldwide on evidence-based approaches to disordered drinking and problematic alcohol use. My seminars combine clinical expertise with practical, immediately applicable strategies that help therapists move beyond binary thinking and confidently assess and treat the full spectrum of alcohol concerns.

Both of these trainings are through PESI and CEUs are available.

Assessment & Treatment of Disordered Drinking

Most therapists aren’t trained to work with the 26% of drinkers who fall between “social” and “alcoholic” – yet these clients are sitting in your office right now. In this training, you’ll gain practical, evidence-based tools to assess and treat the full spectrum of problematic alcohol use, from the high-functioning professional whose moderation attempts repeatedly fail to the client who drinks to cope but isn’t ready to quit. In this 8 hour training, learn sophisticated MI and ACT techniques to work skillfully with resistance, trauma-informed interventions that address root causes, and how to make defensible clinical decisions about level of care while managing liability. You’ll leave with ready-to-use assessment tools, clinical scripts, and intervention strategies that work whether your client chooses abstinence, moderation, or is still contemplating change.

A Shame-Free Approach to Helping Clients Examine Their Relationship with Alcohol

Do you work with clients whose drinking has become problematic but who don’t identify as “alcoholics”? Many clients struggle with excessive alcohol use but are unwilling to question their relationship with alcohol without feeling pressured to admit they need rehab or 12-step groups. In this 3-hour training, you’ll learn how to help clients pivot away from the question “Am I an alcoholic?” and consider instead “Would my life be better without alcohol?” In this 3 hour training using a harm-reduction approach that meets clients wherever they are on their journey, you’ll gain practical tools to explore alcohol use in a non-stigmatizing way, build motivation to cut back or abstain, work through barriers to recovery, and optimize the three essential tools for recovery from disordered drinking—whether your clients choose to stop drinking or not.
