Are you interested in using medication to help you improve your mental health?

  • Have you been dealing with anxiety, depression, OCD, ADHD or another mental health issue?
  • Are you currently in therapy, but thinking that you would benefit from more comprehensive help?
  • Would you like to add another tool to your toolbox of supports and try medication?

Maybe you’re struggling with a lack of motivation and energy—you struggle to get out of bed in the morning and enjoy the things you normally enjoy. Or perhaps you’re feeling overwhelmed by life and unable to juggle all your responsibilities. You might suffer from racing thoughts, crying spells, irritability, and difficulty focusing. You may even end up avoiding other people because you feel like you’re a downer and you think people won’t enjoy being around you.

At the same time, maybe you’re in therapy and you’re starting to make progress, but you still feel like you could use some extra support. Your mood may be low, your energy may be lacking, and you might not feel like you’re coping with life’s challenges as well as you could be.

If this is the case, then we encourage you to get in touch the Therapy for Women Center in Philadelphia. We have a board-certified psychiatrist and nurse practitioner who offer medication management for any clients who are interested. Whether you’re seeing a therapist at our practice or another practice, you are welcome to pursue our psychiatric services and begin your journey toward healing and wellness.

Medication can offer a helpful supplement to therapy.

For many people dealing with mental health issues, medication in conjunction with therapy is the best way to treat their symptoms and find relief. Unfortunately, however, there is still a stigma around medication in many communities. Some people view taking medication as a sign of “weakness” and think that they should be able to overcome difficult emotions on their own.

The truth is that there is no shame in taking medication—just as you would take an antibiotic if you were sick, sometimes you simply need psychiatric medication to help you work through mental health issues. It isn’t a sign of weakness, but a sign of a desire to heal and grow. What’s more, medication does not need to be forever. Some clients can certainly benefit from staying on medication long-term, but many clients only need medication temporarily.

If you’re struggling with anxiety, depression, OCD, trauma, substance abuse, an eating disorder, ADHD, postpartum depression or any other mental health issues, it’s worth consulting a prescriber to see if psychiatric medication can help.

Comprehensive Psychiatric Care in Philadelphia

Medications play a critical role in the treatment of various mental health struggles. The right medication can greatly reduce symptoms and significantly improve your quality of life. What’s more, it can increase the effectiveness of therapy by making it easier for you to implement the skills you and your therapist are working on.

That said, our board-certified psychiatrist and psychiatric nurse practitioner in Philadelphia believe in a less-is-more approach to medication management. Unlike other practices, the Therapy for Women Center doesn’t push clients to try medication—we like to educate them about all their options first. This way, they have a choice about their treatment. After all, some clients find that counseling is beneficial enough that medication is not needed. For those who wish to see a prescriber, however, we try to put them on the minimum dose and the medications with the least possible side effects before trying other options. You can also meet with our psych NP and ask her questions and get familiar with your options without committing to taking any medication!

What to expect with our Philadelphia psychiatry services

Medication management is a form of outpatient treatment that involves an assessment of a client’s need for medications, the provision of a prescription, and ongoing medical monitoring by a licensed prescriber. Throughout the process, your prescriber will evaluate your medication, weigh the potential side effects, and track your medicine’s safety and efficacy.

We provide psychiatry in conjunction with therapy, as we believe that that’s the best way to treat your mental health symptoms. Our psychiatrist and nurse practitioner can either collaborate with one of our therapists or a therapist from another practice for an additional fee. This way, you don’t have to switch counselors if you’re already seeing one at another location.

We believe that medication is one of the most effective tools you can have in your toolbox, but it’s important to remember that it’s not a magical cure. Being on the right medication simply makes it easier to utilize the coping skills and mindfulness strategies that your therapist teaches you. It can help you reach your mental health goals by boosting your mood and regaining the energy to make changes in your life.

Frequently Asked Questions

This is a very common and understandable concern. The good news is that most psychiatric medications are not addictive in the way people typically fear. Our Philadelphia psychiatrist and psychiatric nurse practitioner takes a conservative, “less-is-more” approach to prescribing, starting with the lowest effective doses and regularly monitoring your progress.

Many psychiatric medications work by correcting chemical imbalances rather than creating dependency. Unlike addictive substances, most antidepressants and anxiety medications don’t create cravings or withdrawal when properly managed. Many of our clients use medication temporarily while building coping skills in therapy, then gradually reduce or discontinue medication when appropriate.

We believe in empowering you with information about your treatment options, including benefits, risks, and long-term plans. You’ll always be involved in decisions about your care, and we regularly reassess whether medication is still needed or if adjustments should be made.

We understand that cost is a significant concern for many people seeking mental health care. We accept most major insurance plans for our psychiatric services, and we’ll verify your benefits and discuss any out-of-pocket costs upfront during your initial consultation. Check out our current rates here.

Many insurance plans cover psychiatric consultations and medication management similarly to other medical services. We’re also happy to provide documentation for insurance reimbursement if you have out-of-network benefits.

We believe that quality mental health care should be accessible, and we work with clients to find solutions that fit their budget. Our goal is to provide support without creating financial stress. During your first appointment at any of our Philadelphia-area locations, we’ll discuss all costs transparently so there are no surprises about what to expect.

While we can’t guarantee specific outcomes, many of our clients experience significant improvement in their symptoms within weeks of starting the right medication. The key is finding the medication that works best for your individual brain chemistry and specific symptoms.

Our Philadelphia psychiatrist will work closely with you to monitor your progress and adjust your treatment plan as needed. We’ll schedule regular follow-up appointments to assess how you’re feeling, track any side effects, and make modifications to help you achieve your mental health goals.

What’s encouraging is that psychiatric medication, when combined with therapy, has helped millions of people regain their quality of life. Many clients tell us they wish they had started treatment sooner. You’ll know it’s working when daily activities become easier, your mood improves, and you feel more like yourself again.

Our board-certified psychiatrist provides services at two convenient locations throughout the Philadelphia region. Our main offices are located in Center City Philadelphia at 123 Chestnut Street and 2133 Arch Street, making us easily accessible for downtown residents and commuters. We also have an office in Bala Cynwyd on the Main Line at 33 Rock Hill Road, serving clients from areas like Bryn Mawr, Ardmore, and Wayne.

All of our locations offer comprehensive psychiatric services, including medication management, psychiatric evaluations, and ongoing mental health support. We also provide secure virtual psychiatry appointments for clients throughout Pennsylvania and New Jersey who prefer telehealth services or cannot easily travel to our offices. Each location is designed to provide a comfortable, private environment for your psychiatric care.

Yes, our Philadelphia psychiatrist offers secure, HIPAA-compliant video appointments for medication management and psychiatric consultations. Virtual psychiatry has become an excellent option for many clients, allowing you to receive professional psychiatric care from the comfort and privacy of your own home.

Online psychiatric sessions work well for medication management visits, follow-up appointments, and ongoing mental health support. Our virtual platform is user-friendly and secure, ensuring your privacy and confidentiality are maintained throughout your session. You’ll need a reliable internet connection, a device with a camera and microphone, and a private space for your appointment.

Virtual psychiatry is particularly beneficial for clients with transportation challenges, busy schedules, or those who live farther from our Philadelphia-area offices. We serve clients throughout Pennsylvania and New Jersey via telehealth, making quality psychiatric care more accessible than ever. During your initial consultation, we’ll determine whether virtual or in-person sessions are the best fit for your specific needs and treatment goals.

If you’re experiencing persistent symptoms of depression, anxiety, mood swings, difficulty concentrating, or other mental health challenges that interfere with your daily life, it may be helpful to consult with our Philadelphia psychiatrist. Many people benefit from psychiatric evaluation when therapy alone isn’t providing enough relief, or when symptoms are significantly impacting work, relationships, or overall quality of life.

Common signs that psychiatric consultation might be beneficial include feeling overwhelmed by emotions, experiencing sleep disturbances, having difficulty functioning in daily activities, or noticing changes in appetite or energy levels. If you’re already in therapy but still struggling with symptoms, adding medication management to your treatment plan can often provide the additional support needed for improvement.

Our psychiatrist and psych NP can assess whether medication might be beneficial as part of your comprehensive treatment plan. During your consultation, we’ll discuss your symptoms, medical history, and treatment goals to determine the best approach for your individual situation and help you make an informed decision about your mental health care.

Both our psychiatrist and psychiatric nurse practitioner are qualified to prescribe medication and provide mental health treatment, but they have different educational backgrounds and training paths.

A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who completed four years of medical school followed by a four-year psychiatry residency. They have extensive training in diagnosing and treating mental health conditions, prescribing medications, and understanding how psychiatric conditions interact with other medical issues.

A psychiatric nurse practitioner (PMHNP) is an advanced practice registered nurse who completed specialized graduate-level training in psychiatric care. They’re licensed to diagnose mental health conditions, prescribe medications, and provide therapy in most states, including Pennsylvania and New Jersey.

At our Philadelphia-area practice, both our psychiatrist and psychiatric nurse practitioner work collaboratively to provide comprehensive care. The choice between seeing one or the other often depends on availability, your specific needs, and personal preference. Our psych NP is less expensive and able to see you much quicker. However, noth providers follow the same evidence-based treatment approaches and maintain the highest standards of care for medication management and psychiatric services.

The frequency of your psychiatry appointments depends on your specific mental health needs, the type of medication you’re taking, and how you’re responding to treatment. Initially, you’ll typically see our Philadelphia psychiatrist more frequently to establish your treatment plan and monitor your response to any prescribed medications.

During the medication stabilization period, appointments are usually scheduled every month. This allows your psychiatrist to closely monitor how you’re adjusting to medication, track any side effects, and make necessary dosage adjustments to optimize your treatment. This monthly schedule ensures we can respond quickly to any concerns or needed changes during this critical phase of treatment.

Once your medication is stabilized and you’re feeling better, appointments typically move to every three months for ongoing medication management and mental health monitoring. These quarterly visits allow us to maintain consistent care while giving you more flexibility in your schedule.

Important note about controlled substances: If you are taking ADHD medications such as Adderall, Vyvanse, or other controlled substances, federal and state regulations require that you meet in person at one of our Philadelphia-area offices for these appointments. This includes initial evaluations, medication adjustments, and ongoing monitoring visits. These regulations are in place to ensure proper oversight of controlled medications and maintain the highest standards of patient safety.

For all other psychiatric medications—including antidepressants, anti-anxiety medications, mood stabilizers, and antipsychotics—we offer both in-person appointments at our Bala Cynwyd, Center City Philadelphia, as well as secure virtual sessions for clients throughout Pennsylvania and New Jersey.

Let us help you find the path toward healing and wellness.

Between the power of therapy and the support of our Philadelphia psychiatrist and nurse practitioner, we are confident that our comprehensive approach to treatment can provide the relief you’re looking for. To begin your journey toward healing and wellness, you can contact us or book an appointment at any of our Philadelphia area locations.

“They just genuinely care about their patients.”

"I found this center when I needed it most in life. They matched me with a few therapists and first time was a charm. The center itself is very quick to act if you need anything.
