We specialize in working with women through a vast array of issues unique to them. We work with women on a variety of issues including: adjusting to motherhood, modern dating, disordered eating, the mental load, postpartum depression, infertility, deciding whether to have children, and more.
Get StartedMaybe your mental health challenges have made it difficult to enjoy moments with your partner, children, or friends. Perhaps you’re struggling with infertility, postpartum depression, or other perinatal issues. On top of your stressors, you’re still expected to be there for everyone in your life and juggle your career and home life with ease. To cope with all your stress, you might engage in self-sabotaging behaviors like drinking too much, skipping meals, or spending excessive time on social media. As a result, you may be thinking of seeing a therapist who specializes in providing mental health support for women.
As a woman in today’s world, perhaps you feel bombarded by sky-high expectations for beauty and success. When you don’t live up to the standards set by social media and diet culture, you may spiral down and worry that you’re not good enough. Maybe you suffer from negative body image and have trouble accepting the way you look.
Additionally, perhaps your relationships don’t make you feel good about who you are. You might be in a toxic or abusive relationship or have a partner who doesn’t respect your needs and boundaries. Deep down, you probably wish you had more of a voice in your relationships—you’re tired of making yourself invisible for the other person.
If you want to make room for self-care, reclaim your voice, and live with more pep in your step, we encourage you to pursue women’s counseling with us. Here at the Therapy for Women Center, we specialize in helping women improve their mental health and better their relationships with themselves and others. We’re confident that we can do the same for you.
The truth is that, while we like to believe that we’ve achieved gender equality, women still face disproportionate adversity in our world today. Between sexism in the workplace, unrealistic beauty standards, and recent attacks on women’s rights, it’s no secret that most women are struggling. They’re more likely to suffer from domestic abuse than men (1). They’re also more likely to deal with anxiety, depression, and other mental health ailments (2). And although women have more career opportunities than they did before, they’re still expected to bear the mental load of motherhood.
Additionally, many of the expectations that women face are contradictory in nature. They’re supposed to be beautiful and maintain their looks, but they can’t be too obsessed with looks or else they’re labeled vainglorious. They’re supposed to be slim and fit, but they’re also supposed to bear children, which puts a lot of natural wear and tear on the body. What’s more, women are expected to be career-oriented and successful while still bearing the roles of wife, mother, homemaker, etc. In the face of all these conflicting demands, it’s no wonder so many women are stressed and burnt out.
Low self-worth and negative body image have become especially prevalent in recent decades, as women now have the ability to compare themselves to thousands of influencers, models, and celebrities on social media. The standard for beauty and fitness is simply unrealistic—and in some cases purely unattainable. It makes so many women feel ashamed about their body size, which only exacerbates the epidemic of negative self-image and eating disorders.
Now more than ever, women need a place where they can escape the clamor of voices telling them who they need to be, how they need to dress, and what they need to eat. In short, they need somewhere where they can be themselves and find respite from the pressures of the outside world. That’s what therapy offers.
Get StartedAt Therapy for Women in Philadelphia, our mission is to give you tangible tools and skills that you can use to manage your mental health challenges and effectively act as your own therapist. We want you to feel seen, heard, and understood, but we also want to empower you to change your life and achieve your hopes and dreams. We’ll help you make room for self-care, improve your sense of self-worth, and reclaim your voice.
Our therapists specialize in treating women’s issues and we understand many of the ways that these issues overlap with anxiety, depression, trauma, eating disorders and OCD. Many of our specialists are also perinatal-certified, so our approach to counseling can help you work through infertility, bond with your baby, manage the mental load of motherhood, and deal with any other challenges related to the perinatal period.
Get StartedTherapy looks different from client to client, as we recognize that each woman is unique and deserves a treatment plan that reflects that uniqueness. Generally, we’ll start by getting to the root cause of your struggles so that we can understand how you got to where you are today. Then we’ll focus on practical skills, such as grounding and mindfulness, that you can draw from to manage your symptoms in day-to-day life. Some of the main approaches that our practice uses are listed below:
DIALECTICAL BEHAVIORAL THERAPY (DBT) —This approach teaches skill-building in four areas: mindfulness, emotional regulation, distress tolerance, and interpersonal effectiveness. Most of the DBT skills that we utilize are relationship-oriented, focused on helping you set boundaries, advocate for your needs, and improve your communication.
ACCEPTANCE AND COMMITMENT THERAPY (ACT) —The goal of ACT is to help you accept the things you can’t control and commit to focusing on living a life that aligns with your values. When you are in tune with your values, it’s easier to feel more confident in who you are.
INTERNAL FAMILY SYSTEMS (IFS) — All of our personalities are made up of many different parts. IFS can help you get in touch with all of your parts, allowing you to understand yourself on a deeper level and heal the parts of your personality that were wounded by trauma.
By drawing from whatever combination of approaches suits you best, our therapists are confident that we can help you learn how to truly take care of yourself, build your confidence, and be more present in your life.
Get StartedAs our practice name implies, women’s issues are our specialty. We have therapists who specialize in providing counseling for infertility, postpartum depression, motherhood, child loss, domestic violence, relationship issues, eating disorders, self-esteem, trauma, and more. We created this practice with the understanding that women face unique issues and want a safe space specific to them.
At Therapy for Women, we tailor treatment to your needs and goals. There isn’t an exact timeframe for therapy; many people find relief after just a few sessions, while others need longer to overcome their issues. Regardless of how long therapy takes, we encourage you to be kind to yourself and practice self-compassion, since everyone heals at their own pace.
Therapy is an investment in the most important thing about you: your mental health. When your mental health is strong, every other area of your life generally follows suit. What’s more, when people put off going to therapy, they usually end up having to spend more money on therapy later on since their symptoms generally compound over time. This is why it’s so essential to be proactive and take care of your emotional wellbeing sooner rather than later.
Our therapists are passionate about female empowerment and our approach to counseling can help you build your confidence and self-esteem. To learn more about our approach to women’s therapy, you can contact us or book an appointment.
